Job description
The Winding Engine Driver is responsible for the safe, competent, and legally compliant operation of the winding engine (hoist) used to convey personnel, material, and mineral between the surface and underground working levels. The role carries direct responsibility for the safety of all persons conveyed in the conveyance and for protecting plant, equipment, and the shaft system from damage arising from incorrect or negligent operation.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Operate the winding engine to raise and lower personnel, material, ore, and rock in strict accordance with statutory requirements, the mine's Code of Practice for winding, and the shaft signal code.
- Respond accurately and without delay to signals received from onsetters, banksmen, and other authorised persons.
- Control winding speed, acceleration, and deceleration to remain within the designed and permitted operating parameters of the winder and shaft (rope, conveyance, and shaft steelwork limits).
- Apply correct procedures for man-winding, rock/material winding, and any change between winding modes.
- Bring the conveyance to rest at the correct position at each landing/station within prescribed tolerances.
- Immediately stop or safely arrest winding in any situation of doubt, signal failure, mechanical or electrical abnormality, or perceived danger, and report the situation to the responsible official.
Minimum Qualifications, Certification and Experience
- A valid, unendorsed Winding Engine Driver's Certificate of Competency issued by the competent statutory authority, applicable to the class/type of winder to be operated.
- Prerequisite certification and practical shift requirements (e.g. an Onsetter's/Banksman's Certificate of Competency and the prescribed number of practical shifts) as specified in the governing regulations must have been satisfied prior to certification.
