How to Find Jobs With No Matric in South Africa

7 min read · Updated 17 June 2026

Not finishing matric closes some doors, but plenty stay wide open. Many South African employers care more about whether you will show up, work hard and learn than about a certificate. This guide covers the jobs you can get without matric, how to apply, and simple steps to keep building toward a better income.

Jobs that commonly hire without matric

These roles regularly take on workers who have not completed matric, and most train you on the job:

Tickets and certificates that beat matric

For many jobs, a specific certificate matters more than matric. These are often short and affordable:

  • PSIRA for security work
  • Forklift / machinery licence for warehouse and logistics
  • First aid for many sites
  • Driver's licence and PrDP for driving roles
  • Code 10 / 14 for trucks

A single ticket can unlock a whole category of better-paying work. Treat it as an investment in yourself.

How to apply without matric

  • Be honest about your education on your CV. Do not claim a matric you do not have, because employers check.
  • Lead with your strengths: reliability, physical fitness, any tickets, and willingness to learn.
  • Apply in person where it makes sense. For general worker, cleaning and forecourt roles, dropping off a neat CV and being polite in person can put you ahead.
  • Use your network. Tell people you are looking; many of these jobs are filled by referral.

Our CV guide shows how to build a strong CV even with limited education.

Keep your options open

A job now does not mean stuck forever. While you earn, you can:

  • Finish matric through a part-time or adult learning centre, or rewrite subjects.
  • Study a trade at a TVET college, which often does not require full matric to start.
  • Stack short courses and tickets to qualify for better roles.

Many supervisors and team leaders started as general workers and worked up. Reliability plus one new skill a year compounds fast.

Watch out for scams

People without matric are often targeted by scammers promising "guaranteed" jobs for a fee. Remember the golden rule: a real employer pays you, never the other way round. Never pay for a job, training or registration. Read our job scams guide before you apply anywhere.
