Job description
The Truck Workshop Manager oversees the daily maintenance, repair, and servicing operations of a heavy-duty truck fleet. This role requires a hands-on leader who coordinates technical teams, controls operational costs, and minimizes vehicle downtime to maintain a high-performing supply chain. The ideal candidate ensures full compliance with occupational safety laws and maintains a highly productive garage environment. Key Responsibilities:
Fleet & Maintenance Control
- Schedule and coordinate all routine preventative maintenance, emergency breakdowns, and major mechanical repairs.
- Troubleshoot complex issues relating to diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and electronic braking systems.
- Decide when to repair components in-house versus when to source specialized support from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
- Track vehicle turnaround times using a Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
Team Leadership & Management
- Supervise and coach a team of diesel mechanics, apprentices, auto-electricians, and workshop assistants.
- Manage staff schedules, monitor daily timekeeping, and equitably allocate overtime hours.
- Enforce discipline and resolve workplace conflicts in conjunction with Human Resources.
- Identify training gaps to keep technical teams updated on advanced electronic and commercial engine technologies.Financial & Administrative Operations
- Control workshop budgets, authorize purchase orders, and monitor spare parts inventory levels.
Safety, Health, and Environment (SHEQ)
- Implement strict health and safety procedures according to relevant national workplace safety legislation.
- Conduct weekly toolbox talks to reinforce safe tool use and industrial lifting practices.
- Oversee PPE compliance and ensure workshops are kept tidy, secure, and clean.
- Manage hazardous waste disposal, including used lubricants, oils, and toxic heavy-vehicle batteries.
Job Requirements
- Education: Certified Red Seal Diesel Mechanic (or regional trade equivalent) or a Technical Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 to 10 years of hands-on technical heavy-truck repair experience, with at least 3 years in a clear supervisory or managerial role.
- Licensing: Valid commercial heavy-vehicle driver’s license (e.g., Code 14 / Class A CDL) with professional driving permits.
- Technical Skills: Proficient with diagnostic scan software, MS Office (Excel, Word), and fleet management database software.
- Competencies: Strong logistical thinking, clear conflict-resolution abilities, and exceptional verbal communication.
- Review and approve all supplier quotations, internal invoices, and warranty claims.
- Optimize workshop efficiency by eliminating technician idle time and speeding up parts procurement.
- Compile detailed reports for senior leadership regarding fleet health, repair costs, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
