Job Purpose:
The Teaching Experience Supervisor plays a critical role in supporting the professional development of student teachers during their school-based teaching practice. The Supervisor is responsible for observing, mentoring, assessing, and reporting on student performance in accordance with the institution’s requirements and the national teaching standards.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Supervision of Teaching Practice:
- Conduct scheduled school visits (in-person) to observe student teachers in the classroom.
- Evaluate and assess lesson planning, classroom delivery, classroom management, and reflective practice.
- Providing feedback essential to the student teachers regarding the content of observation and evaluation.
Mentorship and Support:
- Act as a mentor, offering guidance to student teachers.
- Ensuring and assisting the student teachers to reflect on their performance, identifying both strengths and areas of needed improvement regarding teaching /learning objectives, goals, strategies/approaches.
- Recommending teaching methods and/or alternatives for improving deficient areas in relation to the student teachers’ performance.
Assessment and Reporting:
- Complete formal observation reports and assessment rubrics according to institutional guidelines.
- Submit accurate and timely reports to the institution’s Teaching Practice Office.
- Participate in marking process if required.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Maintain regular communication with student teachers, mentor teachers at host schools, and institutional coordinators.
- Attend briefing, training, and feedback sessions as required by the institution.
- Uphold ethical conduct and confidentiality in all supervision activities.
Minimum Requirements:
Qualifications –
- Honours degree in Education. – Intermediate Phase or Foundation phase.
- The undergraduate or postgraduate qualification must include a focus on teaching at the Higher Certificate in Early Childhood band.
Experience –
- A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in the relevant phase
- Experience in mentoring or supervising student teachers (preferred).
- Knowledge of CAPS curriculum and current teaching methodologies.
- Familiarity with inclusive education and classroom diversity.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to provide constructive feedback.
- Ability to assess lesson plans, teaching practice, and reflective journals.
- Tech-savvy: able to use online platforms like Zoom, Teams, Google Classroom, etc. (if supervision is online or hybrid).
- Attention to detail and excellent report-writing skills.
Other requirements
- SACE registration (essential).
- Have a valid driver’s license and have your own car.
- Must have no criminal record.
- Availability during school hours and university term dates.
Key Competencies:
- Knowledge and understanding of the South African higher education systems and regulatory framework.
- Knowledge and understanding of the Teaching and Learning theory and
- The ability to provide student support
- The ability to work with and learn more about digitalized academic
- The ability to cope with a frequently changing environment and to adapt to evolving
- Ability to adhere to rules and strictly follow work
- Deadline-orientated and can work well under
- Ability to manage time
