Job description
Job Purpose
The Tax Accountant is responsible for ensuring the company's tax compliance and reporting obligations are met accurately and on time. The role oversees tax calculations, submissions, reconciliations, audits, and provides tax advisory support while ensuring compliance with South African tax legislation and company policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and submit all statutory tax returns, including VAT, PAYE, Income Tax, Provisional Tax, Dividends Tax, and Withholding Tax where applicable.
- Ensure compliance with SARS regulations and maintain accurate tax records.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual tax reconciliations.
- Calculate current and deferred tax provisions for financial reporting.
- Manage SARS audits, tax queries, objections, and correspondence.
- Monitor changes in tax legislation and advise management on any business impact.
- Assist with the preparation of annual financial statements relating to tax disclosures.
- Reconcile tax-related general ledger accounts.
- Support external auditors during annual audits.
- Identify tax risks and recommend practical solutions to improve compliance.
- Ensure timely payment of all tax obligations.
- Liaise with external tax consultants, auditors, and regulatory authorities where required.
- Support internal finance projects and process improvements.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or a related field.
- Professional qualification or progress towards SAICA, SAIPA, CIMA, or equivalent will be advantageous.
- 3–5 years' experience in a Tax Accountant or similar role.
- Strong knowledge of South African tax legislation and SARS requirements.
- Experience with VAT, PAYE, Corporate Income Tax, and Provisional Tax.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience working with ERP systems (SAP experience will be advantageous).
