Duties & Responsibilities
Reefer Operations
- Conduct pre-trip inspections on empty refrigerated marine containers within the depot.
- Perform repairs and maintenance on refrigerated containers in accordance with operational standards.
- Mentor and train assistant reefer technicians and PTI clerks to ensure skill development and adherence to procedures.
- Inspect and verify the quality of repairs completed by assistant reefer technicians and PTI clerks to ensure compliance with standards.
- Perform calibration of refrigerated containers used for cold treatment applications.
Reports
- Submit daily reports of completed work to the supervisor for review and recordkeeping.
Customer Service

Attend call-outs to the port, vessels, or client premises to carry out repairs on refrigerated containers.

Perform on-site port monitoring of reefers to ensure proper functionality and temperature compliance.

Manage, maintain, and deliver ship’s spares inventory as required.

Comply with all Health and Safety regulations and procedures within the depot.

Carry out any reasonable instructions issued by your superior relating to depot operations and activities
Desired Experience & Qualification
Minimum Academic and Professional Qualifications and Experience Required for this position
Education:
- Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent qualification.
- A recognized technical or trade qualification in Refrigeration, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering would be advantages (e.g. Trade Test Certificate – Refrigeration Mechanic or Electrician).
Experience:
- Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience working with refrigerated marine containers (reefers), preferably within a depot, port, or transport environment.
- Experience in fault finding, repairs, and maintenance of reefer units (Carrier, Thermo King, Daikin, or Star Cool).
- Prior experience performing PTI (Pre-Trip Inspection) and cold treatment calibration will be advantageous.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong understanding of electrical and refrigeration systems.
- Ability to interpret technical diagrams and service manuals.
- Computer literacy for diagnostic and reporting purposes.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Attention to detail, accuracy, and adherence to safety protocols.
- Ability to work under pressure, including standby duties, weekends, and overtime when required.
Other Requirements:
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Physically fit and medically able to perform manual and field-based task
