Palliative Travel Registered Nurse (RN)

About Us:
We are a compassionate healthcare provider specializing in palliative care. We are seeking an experienced Travel Registered Nurse to conduct home and hospital visits, providing high-quality patient care in and around Gauteng.

Role Overview:
The ideal candidate must be self-motivated, highly organized, and able to work independently. You must be willing to drive, have a reliable vehicle, and possess a functional smartphone with a working camera. Strong communication skills and attention to detail are essential.

Minimum Requirements

• Registered/Professional Nurse qualification – Diploma or Degree in Nursing.
• Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Registered/Professional Nurse.
• Current BLS/CPR certification with the American Heart Association (AHA).
• Valid driver's licence and reliable own transport.
• Willingness to travel between patients.
• Able to work flexible hours, weekends and on-call duties.
• Ability to work independently and under pressure.

Clinical & Hospital Experience

Experience in the following areas will be highly advantageous:

• Trauma
• ICU
• Dialysis
• Medical and surgical wards
• Emergency/acute care
• Oncology
• Palliative care
• Urology

Strong clinical experience must include:

• Comprehensive patient assessment.
• Medication administration.
• Post-operative care.
• Recognition and appropriate escalation of clinical deterioration.
• Management/recognition of emergencies such as anaphylaxis, sepsis, respiratory distress and hypo-/hyperglycaemia.

IV Therapy & Medication Administration

The successful candidate must be competent in:

• Peripheral IV cannulation and management.
• IV medication and infusion administration.
• Monitoring patients before, during and after IV therapy.
• Recognition and escalation of IV-related complications.
• PICC line and implanted port experience will be an added advantage.

Wound Care

Experience in the assessment and management of:

• Pressure injuries.
• Surgical and post-operative wounds.
• Infected and complex wounds.
• Diabetic and vascular/venous wounds.
• Malignant/fungating wounds.

The candidate must be competent in wound assessment, documentation, measurements, dressing selection, infection prevention and wound-care reporting.

Urological Care

Experience and competency in:

• Urethral catheterisation.
• Suprapubic catheter management.
• Catheter assessment and identification of complications.
• Appropriate catheter-care and infection-prevention practices.
• Intravesical bladder treatments, including BCG therapy, will be a strong advantage.

Phlebotomy

Competency in:

• Venepuncture and drawing blood specimens.
• Correct selection and use of specimen tubes.
• Correct identification, labelling, handling and transportation of specimens.
• Maintaining appropriate infection-control and safety procedures.

Home-Based / Travel Nursing

As the successful candidate will work independently in patients' homes, they must demonstrate:

• Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills.
• Ability to recognise deterioration and escalate concerns promptly.
• Excellent infection-control and aseptic technique.
• Accurate and comprehensive clinical documentation.
• Professional communication with patients, families, doctors and the multidisciplinary team.
• Respect for patient dignity, privacy and confidentiality.
• Competency in vital-sign monitoring, HGT testing and other home-monitoring equipment.
• Ability to work independently within professional scope of practice and organisational protocols.

This is an urgent position. The successful candidate will be required to complete Unique Health training and competency requirements, as well as participate in buddy sessions with Discovery where applicable, to ensure approval and sign-off before commencing duties.

Required Skills and Experience:

• Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse
• Expertise in wound care and IV therapy
• Strong observation skills and attention to detail
• Excellent communication and report-writing skills
• Computer literate

Qualifications:

• Registered Nurse with valid SANC registration
• Valid driver’s license
• Reliable vehicle and smartphone with working camera
