Job description
Managed Services Provider with a well-established and growing brand and client base. The company has invested significantly in its people and business infrastructure over this period and continues to do so; we now employ more than one hundred staff in our UK, Cape Town, and Manila offices.

Overall purpose
The Network Design Engineer scopes, designs, specifies, and proposes IT network infrastructure and supportable solutions for clients and prospects. Working closely with the Lead Solution Architect and wider commercial and technical teams, this role translates client requirements into technically robust, commercially viable solutions that support customer success, security, efficiency, and OryxAlign's growth plans. The role balances immediate client needs with longer-term technology, service, and commercial objectives, ensuring proposed solutions are practical, sustainable, and aligned to future service requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Sales, Account Management, Professional Services, and Managed Services to scope, design, and propose network infrastructure solutions and transformational projects
- Provide accurate, evidence-based technical input for tenders and bid responses, including solution overviews, design content, options, risks, and benefits
- Attend client meetings with Sales and Account Management colleagues, providing consultative support, technical expertise, and clear recommendations
- Develop detailed network topologies, high- and low-level designs, schematics, and related technical documentation
- Maintain strong technical knowledge of network systems, particularly Cisco, Dell, and Meraki technologies
- Support complex lifecycle replacement projects to ensure client hardware remains supported and aligned to best practice
- Develop and maintain client technology roadmaps, IT strategies, and budgets aligned with client goals, commercial priorities, and future service requirements
- Troubleshoot issues, identify risks, and make recommendations grounded in evidence, cost, value, and supportability
- Share technical knowledge and contribute to continuous improvement in solution design, documentation, and delivery practices
- Prioritise workload effectively, provide timely updates, and support successful client handovers and project delivery
- Complete relevant health and safety training and follow appropriate guidance related to the role
Required Skills & Abilities
- Strong technical understanding of architectural standards and supportable solution requirements
- Ability to produce clear, well-presented, end-to-end technical solutions and design documentation that explains assumptions, rationale, and expectations
- Expertise in public cloud infrastructure, infrastructure schematics, network topologies, and related design artefacts
- Experience contributing to bid management, RFIs, tender responses, and commercially aligned technical proposals
- Cybersecurity knowledge across relevant platforms and the ability to design secure, supportable client solutions
- Proficient knowledge of networking, storage, server technologies, hardware, and IP voice technologies
- Understanding of Smart Building infrastructure and experience working with varied stakeholder groups
- Working knowledge of project management and ITIL practices
- Strong written communication, prioritisation, stakeholder coordination, and evidence-based decision-making skills
- Ability to evaluate technical options by weighing evidence, risk, financial impact, commercial priorities, supportability, and broader business impact
Experience and expertise
Essential
- Cisco CCNA certification, or an equivalent South African-recognised networking qualification, such as an NQF Level 5 IT/networking qualification, combined with relevant practical network design experience
Desirable
- Advanced Cisco certification such as CCNP Enterprise, or equivalent senior-level networking experience in enterprise or managed services environments.
- Relevant South African qualifications registered on, or aligned to, the National Qualifications Framework, for example an IT, systems support, telecommunications, or networking qualification at NQF Level 5 or above.
- Knowledge of Juniper, HP, and Dell networking technologies.
- Understanding of Smart Building infrastructure, including BMS, PMS, and ACS.
- Proficiency in Microsoft cloud technologies, including Azure, M365, and related technologies.
- Experience with wireless design and survey tools such as Ekahau ECSC or equivalent.
