Job description

Job Purpose To ensure all liquor products are merchandised, displayed, and rotated in accordance with Pick n Pay’s merchandising and hygiene standards, while maintaining legal compliance with the Liquor Act, 59 of 2003. The Liquor Merchandiser ensures that the department’s shelves, fridges, and promotional areas are fully stocked, accurately priced, and visually appealing, contributing to sales growth and customer satisfaction.

*Key Responsibilities**Merchandising and Product Display Implement Pick n Pay’s merchandising standards within the liquor department.

  • Ensure all shelves, gondolas, and fridges are neatly packed, faced, and filled.
  • Execute promotional displays according to planograms and promotional briefs.
  • Monitor shelf edge labels and ensure prices match the POS system.
  • Maintain clean and organized shelves, displays, and storage areas.
  • Check for damaged, expired, or leaking stock and remove immediately.

Stock Rotation and Availability* Apply First-In, First-Out (FIFO) principles to all stock rotation.

  • Replenish shelves promptly to ensure product availability at all times.
  • Check expiry dates and ensure fresh stock presentation.
  • Assist in monitoring stock levels and reporting shortages to the Liquor Manager.
  • Help with unpacking deliveries and verifying quantities against GRVs.
  • Ensure proper cold chain management for temperature-sensitive products.

Pricing, Promotions, and Signage* Display correct shelf edge labels for every product.

  • Assist with price changes and ensure updates are completed before trade.
  • Set up and maintain promotional displays and signage according to store directives.
  • Communicate upcoming promotions and product launches to the team.
  • Monitor and report discrepancies between signage and actual pricing.

Housekeeping and Hygiene Standards* Keep aisles, fridges, and displays free of clutter and hazards.

  • Clean shelves, racks, and fridges as per cleaning schedules.
  • Ensure proper storage of crates, cartons, and packaging.
  • Dispose of waste, empty bottles, and boxes in designated areas.
  • Maintain compliance with Pick n Pay’s Health and Safety Policy and the Liquor Act.
  • Report maintenance issues or unsafe conditions immediately.

Customer Service and Product Knowledge* Assist customers courteously and professionally.

  • Offer product guidance and recommendations where appropriate.
  • Support the cashier team during busy trading periods.
  • Ensure customers are of legal age before assisting with liquor purchases.
  • Escalate any customer complaints or policy violations to the Liquor Manager.

Compliance and Safety* Adhere to the Liquor Act, 59 of 2003, and store liquor license conditions.

  • Follow company policies regarding responsible liquor handling and sales.
  • Observe safe lifting techniques and use PPE when required.
  • Report any theft, loss, or irregular activity to the Liquor Supervisor.
  • Participate in store safety meetings and mandatory training sessions.

Health, Safety & Compliance* Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of 1993, and Pick n Pay’s Health and Safety Standards.

  • Adhere to all Liquor Act licensing conditions.
  • Ensure safe handling of stock and adherence to manual lifting protocols.
  • Report unsafe conditions, spills, or breakages immediately.
  • Participate in all safety and compliance briefings.
  • Ensure use of PPE where applicable and maintain a safe work environment.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements* Education: Grade 12 / Matric (NQF Level 4) or equivalent level of literacy and numeracy required to perform the role

  • Experience: Minimum 1–2 years' experience in retail merchandising, shelf-packing, stock replenishment, or a retail environment (liquor retail experience advantageous)
  • Product Knowledge: Basic knowledge of liquor products, merchandising principles, display standards, and promotional execution (advantageous)
  • Compliance Knowledge: Basic understanding of liquor legislation, responsible retailing practices, age-restriction requirements, and company policies relating to liquor sales (advantageous)
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to safely lift, carry, unpack, and replenish stock, including cartons and cases of liquor products, in accordance with operational requirements
  • Work Conditions: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including prolonged standing, walking, shelf-packing, stock rotation, and display maintenance
  • Availability: Willingness and availability to work shifts, weekends, evenings, and public holidays in line with retail trading requirements
  • Process Adherence: Ability to follow merchandising standards, stock control procedures, promotional plans, housekeeping requirements, and company operating procedures

Skills and Competencies* Good understanding of merchandising principles and product presentation standards

  • Ability to build, maintain, and replenish displays according to planograms and promotional requirements
