Jib Crane Operator
Seeking an experienced Foundry Jib Crane Operator to safely move molten metal, heavy scrap, and casting molds in a high-heat environment. This role operates under strict South African safety laws on a continuous 12-hour rotational shift system.
The Foundry Jib Crane Operator safely controls base mounted cranes to lift heavy bales and castings within factory environments. Operating under strict South African safety legislation, this role requires high situational awareness to handle hazardous materials, execute precise lifts, and work seamlessly with floor teams.
Shift Structure & Work Patterns
This position operates on a continuous, rotating shift roster complying with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA):
- Shift Duration: 12-hour shifts (06:00 to 18:00 / 18:00 to 06:00).
- Roster Cycle:
- Initially only day shift duty – Monday to Saturday – 06:00 to 18:00.
- Thereafter shifts will be adjusted to 4 Day Shifts on duty, 2 Days off, and 4 Night Shifts on duty, 2 Days off.
- Flexibility: Must be willing to work weekends and public holidays according to the cycle rotation.
Technical Skills (Hard Skills)
- Rigging: Expertise selecting chains, slings, and hooks rated for molten metal environments.
- Precision Load Control: Flawless pendant or radio remote operation to prevent load-swing of hazardous materials.
- OHS Act Compliance: Deep understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993) section 44 regulations.
- Fault Identification: Ability to spot hairline cracks, rope fraying, or cylinder bypass during pre-shift checks.
- Basic Mechanical Care: Routine lubrication, cleaning, and basic care of the crane and hydraulic unit.
Soft Skills
- High Stress Tolerance: Remaining calm and clear-headed under pressure.
- Situational Awareness: Constantly monitoring surroundings for floor workers moving in blind spots.
- Direct Communication: Loud, clear, and assertive verbal commands alongside standardized hand signaling.
- Strong Teamwork: Seamless coordination with Furnace Operators, Pourers, and Quality Inspectors.
Experience & Requirements (Mid to Seasoned Level)
- Experience: Minimum 3 to 5 years of solid experience operating lifting equipment inside a heavy foundry, steel mill, or smelting plant. (Entry-level candidates will not be considered).
- Licensing: Active C58 Jib Crane certification endorsed by an accredited provider and registered with merSETA/DEL.
- Medical Fitness: Must pass a stringent, industry-standard Foundry Medical Examination (including lung function, heat tolerance, and audio tests).
- Language: Fluent verbal and written English plus proficiency in a local language (e.g., isiZulu, Sesotho, or Afrikaans) for floor safety.
Pay: R41,60 per hour
