Job description
Job Purpose
The Intermediate Phase Teacher is responsible for facilitating the academic, social, and emotional development of learners in Grades 4 through 6. As students transition from basic foundational learning to more complex, subject-focused concepts, the teacher creates an engaging, structured, and inclusive classroom environment that promotes critical thinking, subject mastery, and personal growth.
Key Responsibilities1. Curriculum Delivery & Instructional Planning
- Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality, age-appropriate lessons across designated subject areas
- Align teaching strategies with the required national curriculum CAPS.
- Integrate varied teaching methodologies and digital learning tools to cater to diverse learning styles.
- Prepare dynamic learning resources, worksheets, and practical tasks that stimulate inquiry and problem-solving.
2. Assessment & Reporting
- Design, administer, and mark formal and informal assessments, projects, tests, and examinations.
- Track and maintain accurate records of learner academic progress and attendance.
- Prepare constructive, detailed learner report cards at the end of each term/quarter.
- Conduct parent-teacher conferences to discuss student progress, challenges, and developmental milestones.
3. Classroom & Behaviour Management
- Establish a safe, respectful, and disciplined learning environment using positive behavior strategies.
- Foster an inclusive classroom dynamic where learners feel supported and encouraged to participate.
- Manage administrative classroom duties, including attendance registers and classroom inventory.
4. Pastoral Care & Learner Support
- Identify learners struggling with academic, social, or emotional challenges and implement early interventions.
- Collaborate with learning support specialists, educational psychologists, and parents to support students with learning barriers.
- Promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being appropriate for upper-primary learners.
5. Professional & Extracurricular Contribution
- Participate actively in school extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and cultural events.
- Attend staff meetings, departmental planning sessions, and professional development workshops.
- Maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, management, and the broader school community.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in Intermediate Phase Teaching, or a Bachelor’s Degree plus a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) specializing in Grades 4–6.
- Professional Registration: Professional teaching body registration (e.g., SACE registration where applicable) and valid police clearance.

- Subject Expertise: Strong grasp of core upper-primary concepts in mathematics, literacy, and sciences.
- Classroom Management: Proven ability to manage pre-adolescent learner dynamics with empathy and firmness.
- Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional communication abilities when dealing with young learners, parents, and colleagues.
- Adaptability: Ability to adjust teaching strategies to support differentiated learning needs.
