HSSE Supervisor

Reports To: Human Resources Manager and Special Projects

Position Overview

Reporting to the Human Resources Manager and Special Projects, the successful candidate will manage the day-to-day health, safety, security, and environmental (HSSE) operations of the company. The incumbent will coordinate resources, liaise with internal and external stakeholders, ensure customer requirements are met, and work closely with site managers on safety-related matters.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement transportation, health and safety, and security programmes and activities.
• Lead and facilitate incident investigations to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions.
• Ensure all sites adhere to HSSE principles.
• Provide management with sound advice on legal and regulatory requirements.
• Participate in formal and informal communication initiatives to enhance awareness and understanding of HSSE matters.
• Record incidents and accidents and produce statistical reports for management.
• Advise on specialist health and safety matters, including fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise control, machinery safeguarding, and occupational diseases.
• Brief and debrief drivers before and after every trip.
• Lead driver safety meetings, toolbox talks, and quarterly HSSE committee meetings.
• Ensure BVOs attend refresher training on HSSE regulatory requirements.
• Conduct regular inspections of sites and offices and prepare inspection reports.
• Carry out risk assessments for new or modified products and chemicals.
• Promote a strong health and safety culture among BVOs and site personnel.
• Review Risk and Route Assessments (RRAs), journey plans, and rest-stop plans annually.
• Track and record all vehicle breakdowns for safety monitoring purposes.
• Compile and report identified defects to the Operations Manager for maintenance and repairs.
• Investigate defects to determine root causes and prevent recurrence.
• Conduct daily toolbox talks to reinforce HSSE practices at sites and offices.
• Ensure safety procedures and lock-out procedures are understood and followed by all employees.
• Compile HSSE reports to communicate the company’s health, safety, security, and environmental performance.

Qualifications And Competencies

• Degree in Health and Safety, Transport Management, Mining, or a related field.
• Strong interpersonal and people management skills.
• Ability to work effectively with employees at all levels, from shop floor personnel to senior management.
• Knowledge of transportation safety practices.
• Understanding of transport operations.
• Ability to interpret tachograph charts and vehicle tracking reports.
• Valid driver’s licence.
