Job description

The General Labourer is responsible for supporting the daily production and material-handling activities of the company. The role includes loading and unloading raw materials and finished parts, operating a forklift, assisting with bending operations, packing completed parts, organising materials and components, and ensuring that all required parts are present and correctly grouped for each customer order.

The employee is expected to work safely, accurately and efficiently while maintaining a clean and organised working environment.

2. KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESLoading and Unloading

  • Assist with the daily loading and unloading of steel, sheet metal, components, finished parts and other materials.
  • Ensure materials are handled carefully to prevent damage, scratches, bending or loss.
  • Assist with loading customer orders and deliveries onto vehicles.
  • Check that materials and parts being loaded or unloaded correspond with the relevant documentation or instructions.
  • Place incoming materials in the correct designated storage areas.

Forklift Operation

  • Operate the forklift for loading, unloading and movement of materials where required.
  • Conduct basic pre-use checks before operating the forklift.
  • Operate the forklift safely and in accordance with company safety procedures.
  • Immediately report any forklift damage, defects or unsafe operating conditions.
  • Only operate the forklift while appropriately trained, authorised and, where required, certified/licensed.

Production Support

  • Assist production employees with the movement and handling of parts between laser cutting, bending, finishing, packing and dispatch areas.
  • Assist with bending operations as instructed by the responsible machine operator or supervisor.
  • Help separate, sort and identify laser-cut components.
  • Remove scrap, skeletons and off-cuts from production areas as instructed.
  • Ensure parts are kept together and correctly identified throughout the production process.
  • Assist other production areas when reasonably required.

Order Checking and Part Control

A key responsibility of this position is ensuring that orders are complete before they proceed to packing or dispatch.

The General Labourer must:

  • Collect and organise all components belonging to an order.
  • Check parts against the job card, picking list, drawing, order documentation or other production information provided.
  • Count quantities carefully and confirm that the correct number of each part is present.
  • Ensure different customer orders are not mixed together.
  • Identify missing, incorrect or damaged parts.
  • Immediately report shortages or discrepancies to the supervisor.
  • Do not mark or represent an order as complete unless all required parts have been accounted for.
  • Keep completed orders together in their designated location until they are packed or dispatched.

3. PACKING AND DISPATCH SUPPORT

  • Pack completed parts according to company requirements.
  • Ensure parts are protected against unnecessary damage during packing, storage and transportation.
  • Label or identify packed orders correctly where required.
  • Ensure the correct parts and quantities are allocated to the correct customer order.
  • Assist with preparing completed orders for collection or delivery.
  • Maintain organised staging areas for completed and partially completed orders.

4. HOUSEKEEPING AND ORGANISATION

  • Keep production, packing, loading and storage areas clean and organised.
  • Return tools, equipment, pallets and materials to their designated locations.
  • Stack and store materials safely.
  • Keep walkways, emergency exits and working areas clear.
  • Assist with scrap and waste removal.
  • Maintain good housekeeping standards throughout the working day, not only at the end of a shift.

5. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to read basic job cards, part numbers, quantities and production instructions.
  • Ability to count accurately.
  • Ability to perform physical work, including lifting and moving materials within safe limits.
  • Forklift competency/certification where required for forklift operation.
  • Basic understanding of workshop and manufacturing safety.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a production team.
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing, engineering, steel, laser-cutting or fabrication environment is advantageous.

6. KEY PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

Performance may be assessed against the following:

  • Order completeness: Correct parts and quantities are present before orders are packed or dispatched.
  • Picking accuracy: Parts are correctly matched to the relevant customer/job order.
  • Material handling: Materials and components are moved without unnecessary damage.
  • Loading accuracy: Correct orders and quantities are loaded.
  • Production support: Bending, sorting, packing and other assigned production tasks are completed efficiently.
  • Forklift safety: Forklift is operated safely and responsibly.
  • Housekeeping: Assigned work and storage areas are kept clean and organised.
  • Safety compliance: PPE, safety rules and operating procedures are followed.
  • Attendance and punctuality: Employee reports for work and assigned duties on time.
  • Teamwork: Employee follows reasonable instructions and assists the production team as required.

Pay: R6 800,00 - R8 000,00 per month
