Job description
Qualified Truck Diesel Mechanic to perform skilled technical work within a fast-paced workshop or field environment. The position demands an individual capable of working independently under pressure to execute complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical fault-finding while strictly maintaining safety and regulatory standards. - Diagnostics & Fault Finding: Troubleshoot complex mechanical and auto-electrical problems using computerized diagnostic tools and manual testing methods. [1]
- Routine Servicing & Fleet Maintenance: Execute scheduled preventative maintenance inspections, including oil changes, fluid checks, brake adjustments, and tire rotations. [1, 2]
- Major Mechanical Overhauls: Dismantle, rebuild, and reassemble major components such as diesel engines, gearboxes, differentials, turbochargers, and suspension systems. [1]
- Brakes & Ancillary Systems: Service and repair braking systems, steering components, and trailer hydraulics. [1, 2, 3]
- Breakdown Support: Respond promptly to vehicle breakdowns and provide efficient on-site or field-service emergency repairs. [1, 2]
- Inventory & Administration: Coordinate with workshop management to order spare parts, manage stock levels, and accurately log all completed work and maintenance records. [1, 2, 3]
- Compliance & Safety: Adhere strictly to workshop safety protocols, personal protective equipment (PPE) rules, and transport management regulations. [1, 2]
Job Requirements & Qualifications
- Trade Certification: A valid, recognized Red Seal Trade Test Certificate in Diesel Mechanics (e.g., via merSETA, Olifantsfontein, or QCTO) is mandatory.
- Formal Education: N2 or higher National Certificate in Engineering Studies (Diesel Mechanic stream) or equivalent Grade 12 qualification is highly preferred.
- Experience: A minimum of 5 years of post-apprenticeship experience working directly on heavy commercial vehicles (such as Volvo, Mercedes, Scania, UD, or International trucks).
- Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatic systems, auto-electrical wiring, and onboard electronic systems.
- Licencing: A valid, clean driver's licence (Code 10 or 14 / heavy vehicle licence is highly advantageous for field tests and vehicle movement).
- Physical Capability: Physically fit and able to lift heavy components (minimum 25 kg / 50 lbs) and work comfortably in a demanding workshop environment. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
