Job description

Key performance areas

  • Oversee and manage the academic planning, coordination, implementation and delivery of all clinical skills teaching, learning and assessment activities and materials in the GEMP course.

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Clinical Skills Unit (CSU).

  • Contribute to the day-to-day clinical skills training and assessment of medical students.

  • Serve as a member of the Senior Management team in GEMP and UUME.

  • Serve as a member of the GEMP 1 & 2 Curriculum Committee

  • Oversee the CSU administrator and Equipment Technician management of the physical equipment and human resources (incl. simulated patients and sessional staff) needed to run the academic programmes delivered in the CSU.

  • Manage the physical equipment and the resources (including simulated patients) needed to run the academic programmes of the CSU.

  • Supervise and line manage clinical academics as well as professional and administrative staff who are linked to the CSU.

  • Collaborate with the curriculum coordinators, academic and clinical staff to ensure constructive alignment of Clinical Skills throughout the curriculum

  • Liaise with academic staff from other Faculty departments who use the CSU for academic activities.

  • Participate in assessment processes of UUME, such as OSCE and MCQ assessments, including setting, examining, marking, and moderation.

  • Act as mentor and role model to the GEMP students.

  • Assist with faculty staff development through workshops to train staff and simulated patients.

  • Participate in Health Science Education research, present findings at conferences, and publish in the field.

Minimum requirements to apply for this position:

  • MBBCh (medical doctor) degree from an accredited South African University

  • Registered, and in good standing, with the HPCSA as an independent medical or dental practitioner

  • Evidence of experience in and passion for medical education

  • Any postgraduate qualifications in medical/health professions education

Abilities or experience that would be an advantage in your application

  • Experience in managing a team of staff, academic planning and coordination of academic activities teaching undergraduate medical students clinical skills.

  • Curriculum and assessment design

  • Research

  • An ability to speak two or more (includes English) of the eleven official South African languages

Desirable personal abilities of the successful applicant

  • Good administrative skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office

  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and work as part of the UUME team

  • Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines

  • Good conflict resolution skills

  • Good interpersonal skills, tactful, respectful, non-judgmental, and punctual
