Job description
Our client is seeking a detail-oriented and reliable Bookkeeper & Payroll Administrator to manage the full bookkeeping and payroll function across a portfolio of approximately 20–30 clients. This role requires a strong foundation in accounting principles, the ability to manage multiple client accounts simultaneously, and a proactive approach to meeting deadlines and maintaining compliance.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their career who wants to build strong technical foundations in accounting while gaining exposure to multiple clients and industries.
Key Responsibilities
Bookkeeping
- Maintain accurate financial records for a portfolio of clients
- Capture and process daily financial transactions
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and general ledgers
- Manage accounts payable and receivable processes
- Prepare and submit VAT returns in line with SARS requirements
- Support month-end and year-end closing processes
- Produce trial balances and financial reports for review
Payroll Administration
- Manage end-to-end payroll for multiple clients
- Process payroll accurately, including adjustments and statutory deductions
- Maintain employee records, including leave and payroll data
- Prepare and submit PAYE, UIF, SDL, and related returns
- Generate payroll reports and support client queries
Client Support & Compliance
- Maintain organised filing systems aligned with audit standards
- Liaise with clients to resolve bookkeeping and payroll queries
- Ensure all work is completed within agreed timelines
- Maintain compliance with regulatory and statutory requirements
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting (BCom) or equivalent
- 1–2 years' experience in bookkeeping and payroll (preferably within an accounting firm environment)
- Proven ability to manage full bookkeeping for multiple clients
- Proficiency in accounting software: Xero, Sage Online, QuickBooks, Odoo
- Proficiency in payroll software: SimplePay, VIP, Sage Pastel Payroll
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, VAT, and statutory compliance
- Working knowledge of payroll legislation (PAYE, UIF, SDL)
- Strong organisational, time management, and communication skills
