SUMMARY: Our client is looking for an accountant to join their team.
POSITION INFO: Roles and Responsibilities A. Financial Accounting The Accountant must: 1. Maintain accurate accounting records for the company. 2. Capture and review financial transactions on the accounting system. 3. Prepare monthly management accounts. 4. Prepare income statements, balance sheets, cash flow reports, and trial balances. 5. Ensure all transactions are correctly allocated to the correct accounts and cost centres. 6. Maintain the general ledger. 7. Process journals, accruals, provisions, and month-end adjustments. 8. Assist with year-end financial statements and audit preparation. ________________________________________ B. Accounts Payable 1. Review supplier invoices before payment. 2. Ensure invoices match purchase orders, delivery notes, and approved quotations. 3. Prepare supplier reconciliations. 4. Ensure payments are supported by proper documentation and approvals. 5. Monitor outstanding supplier balances. 6. Resolve supplier account queries. 7. Ensure creditors are paid according to approved payment terms. C. Accounts Receivable 1. Issue customer invoices where required. 2. Monitor debtor balances. 3. Follow up on overdue customer accounts. 4. Prepare debtor reconciliations. 5. Allocate customer payments correctly. 6. Report overdue debtors to management. D. Bank and Cash Management 1. Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly bank reconciliations. 2. Monitor company bank balances. 3. Record all receipts and payments accurately. 4. Maintain petty cash records where applicable. 5. Report unusual transactions or cash flow risks to management. 6. Assist with cash flow forecasting. E. Payroll and HR Finance Support Where applicable, the Accountant must: 1. Review payroll reports before payment. 2. Reconcile payroll to the accounting system. 3. Ensure PAYE, UIF, SDL, and other payroll-related statutory payments are correctly processed. 4. Reconcile salary control accounts. 5. Assist HR with payroll-related financial information. 6. Ensure employee advances, loans, deductions, and reimbursements are properly recorded. F. Tax and Statutory Compliance The Accountant must: 1. Prepare VAT reconciliations and VAT201 submissions. 2. Prepare PAYE, UIF, and SDL reconciliations where applicable. 3. Assist with EMP201 and EMP501 submissions. 4. Assist with income tax, provisional tax, and company tax calculations. 5. Ensure SARS submissions are made on time. 6. Keep records for SARS audits and queries. 7. Ensure compliance with relevant South African tax and accounting requirements. G. Asset and Inventory Accounting For a mining or operational company, the Accountant should also: 1. Maintain the fixed asset register. 2. Record asset purchases, disposals, and depreciation. 3. Reconcile assets to the accounting system. 4. Assist with stock and inventory reconciliations. 5. Monitor fuel, spares, tyres, tools, and consumables cost allocation. 6. Support monthly stock counts and variance investigations. 7. Report abnormal losses, write-offs, or unexplained variances. H. Cost Control and Reporting 1. Prepare cost reports by department, site, project, or equipment. 2. Monitor actual costs against budget. 3. Identify overspending and report variances. 4. Assist management with budget preparation. 5. Track production-related costs such as diesel, maintenance, labour, contractors, transport, and consumables. 6. Assist with profitability analysis. 7. Support management in improving cost control. I. Audit and Internal Controls 1. Prepare audit files and supporting documents. 2. Liaise with external auditors. 3. Ensure company financial policies are followed. 4. Check that payments are properly authorised. 5. Identify weaknesses in financial controls. 6. Recommend improvements to reduce fraud, error
